What is this course about?
This course will benefit anyone who would like to further their skills in clothes making. This course could enhance your job prospects or give you an insight to continue on to a full time fashion course. What are the entry requirements?
You must have completed the ‘Clothesmaking – Beginners’ course or have some experience of clothesmaking. You must be able to take notes. Please note: This course is not run as a workshop, and learners will be expected to follow the course programme and tutor set projects. Learners must attend regularly to ensure progress.
What will I learn?
You will learn the necessary skills to:
- Use a sewing machine and industrial steam iron
- Take accurate body measurements
- Produce a simple garment using a pattern (this will be advised by tutor at the beginning of the course)
- Select an appropriate fabric for the chosen pattern
- Interpret and read pattern instructions
- Cut out and lay up the pattern correctly
- Sew a garment whilst using a range of sewing techniques
How will the course be delivered and how will I be assessed?
Demonstration, practical work, one-to-one and group work and discussions.
You will receive regular verbal feedback from your tutor, who will assess you continually and informally. An Individual Learning Plan will help you monitor your progress and reach your target.
What are the extra costs?
Learners will need to purchase a notebook and pen, a sewing kit (consisting of measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, threads and marking chalk). Some basic equipment is provided. However, bobbins will need to be purchased for use with your own coloured cottons. Whatever garment you make, you will need to buy fabric, trimmings and all the equipment needed to complete it, at a minimum cost of £30. There will also be a small charge for materials needed to produce samples.
What can I progress to next?
Further courses at the Institute, or with other external providers.
Health and Safety requirements?
You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on health & safety procedures and learn how to use a sewing machine safely.
