What is this course about?
Keum-boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver, to make silver-gilt.
This is a one day course suitable for intermediate and experienced jewellers; it will benefit learners who want to advance their skills further with the assistance of an experienced tutor.

What are the entry requirements?
You must have a good knowledge of the processes and techniques of jewellery making with metals. Excellent eyesight and motor skills are required. You will also need to be able to stand for long periods and be able to use specialist hand tools unsupervised.
What will I learn?
Building on previous skills, you will to learn how to apply gold foil to a prepared surface on a piece of your own silver jewellery. This includes texturing, depletion gilding and adhering foil to your silver surface by using heat and pressure, and ways of cold connecting your work with rivets and tabs. This technique can be an added technical skill used to enhance your jewellery further.
How will the course be delivered?
This practical course will be will be delivered in a workshop with teaching, demonstration and guidance from a jewellery tutor using your own personal silver jewellery project. You can also learn the basic principles and do a test piece on a piece of silver if you don't have a jewellery project ready.
How will my learning be assessed?
You will be encouraged to assess and refine your work throughout the course to achieve a high quality finished piece.
What are the extra costs?
You will need to bring your own piece of silver to work with, a new curved burnisher (student tools at Walsh's - good buy or Bellore's) and the gold foil can be purchased on the day from the tutor at Redbridge Institute, around £15-20 depending on quantity used.
What can I progress to next?
On completion of the course you could progress to other courses outside of the Institute or make pieces to sell in the future.
Health & Safety requirements?
You will need to follow the tutor’s instructions on Health and safety procedures. You must NOT wear open toe shoes and long hair must be tied back at all times.
Learners must wear an old shirt/apron.
