On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, Sladjana Robert’s English Functional Skills class visited Snaresbrook Crown Court to observe the justice system in action, enhance their understanding of formal English language, and learn new legal terminology. The court is set within an expansive 18-acre estate, featuring its own lake, Eagle Pond, and comprises of 20 courtrooms. As the busiest Crown Court in the UK, it handles over 7,000 cases annually, including some of the most serious criminal offences.
During the visit, students sat in Court 4 to witness a Bail Application presented by a seasoned Snaresbrook Judge dressed in a distinctive lilac and red gown, which was successfully granted. They then moved to Court 13 to observe a Recorder Judge delivering the summing-up of a trial case to the jury. After lunch, the class remained in Court 13 to observe the opening of a new trial, where a defendant was accused of alleged sexual offences.
This visit provided the learners with valuable real-world exposure to the courtroom environment, allowing them to hear authentic examples of formal legal language in use. Observing live proceedings helped the learners develop their listening skills and comprehension of complex language structures. Additionally, exposure to legal terminology and courtroom procedures enriched their vocabulary and understanding of the justice system, which is particularly beneficial for their English language development and overall communication skills.
