Passport to Careers in Early Years and Childcare

A job in Early Years and Childcare is unique and rewarding. You get to be part of a child’s early education and help to shape their future. No matter what the day brings, you will feel joy in seeing children grow, learn and flourish.

Your Passport journey will begin with an initial advice and guidance session to help explore whether this sector is the right career option for you. It is made up of three badges that will give you the following:

Essential skills: for a career in Early Years and Childcare you will need English and maths at Level 2.

Employability skills: It is important that you can demonstrate communication and teamworking skills and have good CV writing and interview skills.

Sector specific skills:

To work in an Early Years or Childcare setting, you will need a minimum Level 2 qualification in Early Years and Childcare. For progression into supervisory or management roles you will need a Level 3 qualification.

For a career in Early Years and Childcare you will also need to complete the following certificates:

  • Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
  • Safeguarding & Prevent

Next steps

When you have completed your Passport to Careers in Early years and Childcare, you will have developed the skills required to work in an early years, childcare or school setting. The Passport also provides a solid foundation for further specialist training in child development, for example moving onto a Foundation Degree in Childcare or a BA Education.
