Neerja Singh

For Volunteers’ Week, current learner Neerja Singh shares her experience of discovering volunteering opportunities through the Institute and how it has supported her personal and professional growth. Through her journey, Neerja highlights how volunteering helped build her confidence, develop key skills, and open new pathways, ultimately leading to her role as a Community Champion with Colours of Redbridge. Her story is a powerful example of how volunteering can create meaningful opportunities and strengthen connections within the community.

Pushpathevy Arunmainayagam

Pushpathevy has shown a level of determination and resilience that inspires everyone in the classroom. She does not just study English in the classroom; she lives it.

She spends her free time volunteering at the local hospital, giving back to the community and the country she now calls home. By stepping into a busy hospital environment, she has bravely opened herself up to real-world language challenges. This shows her deep desire to assimilate and connect with people from all walks of life. She views every conversation as a chance to improve.She is a role model for older learners and a reminder that it is never too late to succeed and contribute to society.

Her resilience in the face of a new language and her kindness as a hospital volunteer make her a truly outstanding student and incredibly deserving of the Learner of the Month award.

Juliet Ekpu

Juliet has shown outstanding resilient and persistent, having low confidence in this course at the start. Juliet has put in extra time daily to understand it and embrace the challenge rather than withdrawing from it.

Juliet focuses on learning and not just getting to the finish, she seeks feedback on each assignment and rewrites them until she has mastered the skills to improve her work. Juliet has a positive influence and interaction with her classmates, Juliet is a go-getter who goes beyond the required reading to explore advanced techniques in her assignments which allows her to bring a solution to her work. 

She shows excellent teamwork, actively supporting and engaging with peers to achieve shared goals. Juliet has developed life-saving resilience and adaptability, rising in self confidence and psychological strength making her a highly deserving nominee for Learner of the Month.

Sindhura Kota

Sindhura was delighted to receive the Learner of the Month Award, presented by Assistant Principal Maria Sotiriou.

She has been studying at Redbridge Institute for the past two years, having moved to the UK in 2014. A B-Tech graduate and mother of two, Sindhura has successfully balanced family life with her studies, completing courses in Digital Skills for Work (Level 2), GCSE Maths, and English Functional Skills.

Sindhura is a highly dedicated and professional learner—punctual, organised, and consistently producing work to a high standard. She is motivated, reliable, and eager to develop her skills, particularly in communication and digital technologies. She works well with others, contributes positively in group settings, and is a supportive team player.

Throughout her time at the Institute, she has made excellent academic and personal progress. Her confidence in English has grown significantly, and her digital skills now support both her daily life and her children’s education. She has developed strong organisational, interpersonal, and time-management skills, alongside a growing interest in modern IT areas such as AI.

Sindhura is now confidently seeking opportunities in education or IT, with ambitions to build a long-term career in teaching or technology.

Taslima Begum Jeba

Taslima moved to the UK from Bangladesh in 2017. After leaving high school without qualifications, she began her learning journey determined to build a better future. Although she initially struggled with writing during her Entry 3 English course in 2022, her determination never faded.

In 2024, while studying Entry 1 Preparing to Work with Children, her tutor identified possible Dyslexia. Following an assessment, this was confirmed, and Taslima received the support she needed, including a Learning Support Assistant and specialist resources. With this guidance, she began to flourish.

Since then, Taslima has progressed steadily from Level 1 to Level 2, and in 2025 achieved a place on the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator). Alongside this, she continues to study Entry 3 Maths, English, and Digital Skills.

Taslima has 100% attendance, submits well-written assignments on time, and confidently presents her research in class. She works positively with her peers and shows great passion for achieving her goals. She has even helped organise a cake sale to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Taslima’s resilience, commitment, and determination to overcome barriers make her a truly deserving Learner of the Month.

Ava Nipa

Ava Nipa shares her inspiring journey from Bangladesh to London, and how learning at Redbridge Institute of Adult Education helped her take her next steps into a career in childcare.

After enrolling on a Childcare course, Ava built her confidence, developed new skills and achieved her goal of working with children. She has now secured a job in a local nursery and is continuing her studies at Level 3 Childcare, working towards her future career.

Ava’s story is a great example of how adult learning can open doors and create new opportunities.

Sandra B

We are delighted to recognise Sandra  as our Learner of the Month in celebration of her outstanding commitment and progress throughout the Teaching Assistant Level 1 course. Sandra has demonstrated exceptional dedication from the very beginning, achieving an impressive 100% attendance record that reflects her reliability, motivation, and enthusiasm for learning. Since September, she has also been volunteering in a primary school, where she has developed valuable practical skills and made a positive contribution to the classroom environment.

Although Sandra initially found digital tasks challenging and lacked confidence using a laptop, her determination and willingness to practise regularly have led to significant and impressive progress. Her growth in this area is a clear example of her resilience and positive approach to learning. Balancing her studies alongside her roles as a mother and grandmother, Sandra applies her developing skillset both in her placement and within her family. She brings warmth, positivity, and enthusiasm to every session, contributes thoughtfully to discussions, and consistently supports her peers, helping to foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

Sandra’s increasing confidence has also been recognised by her family, highlighting the wider impact of her learning journey. Her story is an inspiring example of how commitment, perseverance, and a positive mindset can lead to meaningful personal and professional development.

Rupanjana Roy

We are thrilled to celebrate Rupanjana as our Learner of the Month for her outstanding dedication and progress in Maths this term. Despite being heavily pregnant and managing family responsibilities, including caring for her young son, Rupanjana has maintained 100% attendance, participates actively in every lesson, and consistently supports her peers with kindness and encouragement. Her determination and commitment make her a truly deserving recipient of this recognition.

Rupanjana has made impressive progress in key areas of Maths, including basic operations, rounding, fractions, and working with money. She approaches every lesson with focus, completes her classwork and homework accurately and on time, and demonstrates a genuine love for learning. Balancing pregnancy, health appointments, and a busy home life is no small challenge, yet Rupanjana attends each session with energy and purpose. She is determined to continue her studies after her baby’s birth as she works toward her long-term goal of becoming a teacher.

What truly stands out is her eagerness to learn and her willingness to support others. Rupanjana brings a positive, encouraging presence to the classroom and often helps classmates who are struggling. Her resilience, enthusiasm, and inspiring attitude make her a role model for learners and a true testament to the power of dedication and perseverance.

Lovely Begum

Lovely Begum has shown outstanding dedication and steady progress throughout the course. A clear difference can be seen in her confidence and improvement in language skills within a short period of time. She actively participates in class, completes her work with care, and constantly looks for ways to improve her English. Her speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills have all developed noticeably, and she is becoming more comfortable using English in everyday situations.

One of Lovely’s most impressive achievements is her perfect attendance record. Despite facing personal challenges due to her mother’s health condition and the need to attend frequent hospital appointments, she has never missed a class. Her commitment is truly admirable—she manages her responsibilities with great discipline, often leaving her mother at the hospital to attend her lessons and returning afterwards to collect her. This demonstrates not only her determination but also her genuine passion for learning and self-improvement.

Over time, Lovely’s growing confidence has been evident both in class and in her daily life. She now communicates more easily in English in community settings and feels more comfortable engaging with people from different backgrounds. While she has not yet progressed to university or employment, she is steadily building the skills and confidence that will help her take those next steps in the future. Lovely’s progress, resilience, and dedication make her a truly deserving nominee for Learner of the Month.

Judith Guarte

Judith started her learning journey at Redbridge Institute, joining both the Childcare Level 1 and ESOL Level 1 courses. She progressed to Childcare Level 2. Judith chose childcare because she has a passion for working with young children. She also wanted to improve her English to help her find a job in the future.

Judith has a physical disability, but she has never let this stop her from reaching her goals. She shows great determination and always works hard to improve her skills and knowledge. Her attendance and punctuality are excellent, and she takes part in all class activities with enthusiasm.

Judith recently joined the Learner Forum, showing that she wants to get involved and have her voice heard. She works well with others and shows strong teamwork and communication skills, both in class and at her nursery placement.

Judith is doing very well on her course and is expected to pass. She has already enrolled onto the Level 3 Childcare course and has been offered a job at the nursery where she volunteers.

Case Study: Stepping into a Rewarding Career With Passport to Adult Social Care

Redbridge Institute, in collaboration with Work Redbridge and Care Providers Voice, launched a one-week “Step into Social Care” programme aimed at introducing newcomers to the world of Adult Social Care. Designed specifically for individuals exploring a new career pathway. 

The programme provided essential training, offering participants a comprehensive introduction to the sector, with a direct route into employment.

To support transition into the workplace, candidates also received tailored interview preparation and mock interview sessions.

“A standout feature of the programme was the guaranteed job interviews offered to all participants. I received three job offers after completing the programme.” explains Mohammed, learner on the programme.  

“My time on the ‘Step into Social Care’ programme was an excellent experience,” Mohammed shared.

“The training provided me with a solid foundation for my role as a care assistant. The support with interview preparation and mock interviews really boosted my confidence when meeting potential employers.”

Now thriving in his new role, Mohammed reflects on how the course helped him feel prepared and capable from day one.

“Every day feels rewarding, especially knowing I am making a positive difference in people’s lives. A highlight for me has been building strong relationships with the individuals I care for, helping them feel comfortable, safe, and valued.”

Mohammed credits the training—particularly the focus on communication and safeguarding—as instrumental in his success and daily work.

“I would definitely recommend Passport to Adult Social Care programme to anyone considering a career in this field. The training not only provides essential skills but also offers continuous support, from interview preparation to job placement. It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about care.”

Sharif Mahdi

Sharif has played an important role in the Redbridge Institute Gardening Club this year. He regularly helps with planting, seeding, and weeding, and is always happy to share his excellent knowledge about growing plants. His advice and support have been a great help to the gardening team. During dry weather, he has given up his own time to water the plants and has shown real care for their needs. His enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to share his knowledge make him a valued member of the group.

As well as being active in the garden, Sharif is a dedicated learner in both ESOL and Entry Level 3 Digital Skills. His ESOL tutor says he is one of the most committed learners they have taught. He always attends on time, completes all homework, and studies at home regularly. In Digital Skills, Sharif works hard, asks questions when he needs help, and supports others in the class.

Vira Mushanska

Vira is from Ukraine and holds a Master’s degree in Physics and IT. Since joining the course, she has shown great commitment and a strong work ethic. She has 100% attendance, is always punctual  and completes all her homework on time.

Vira has achieved outstanding results, scoring 100% in two of her assessments. She is gaining more confidence with the English language and is now comfortable using mathematical terms in conversation with her classmates. This has helped her take a more active role in class discussions.

Vira is not only focused on her own learning but is also very supportive of others. When other learners in the class struggle with calculations, Vira often volunteers to help – especially when extra support is needed. She is patient, kind, and always ready to offer assistance.

She has also shown an interest in volunteering and is looking for ways to get more involved in her community.

Afsana Akter

Afsana move to the UK from Bangladesh and in 2022. She has a degree in economics but had never worked before. Her goal was to find work and become more independent.
She joined the Entry 2 ESOL class in 2023 as a very nervous learner. She lacked confidence, especially in speaking and felt anxious about answering questions or presenting in class. However, Afsana worked hard to overcome her fears. She listened carefully to feedback, practised at home and slowly began to speak up more in lessons. She passed her Entry 2 Speaking and Listening exam in 2023 and was proud of her progress.
Now in the Entry 2 Next Steps class, Afsana is preparing for her Reading and Writing exams. She always completes her work on time and helps her classmates.
Recently, Afsana she applied for a volunteer role at Cancer Research UK all by herself. She completed the online form and phone interview without help and got the role. Her growing confidence and independence are a real inspiration.

Santokh Kaur

Santokh Kaur is originally from India and has been living in the UK for many years. She is a dedicated mother to her autistic, non-verbal child with special needs. Before joining the ESOL course, Santokh faced many challenges. Communicating in English at hospitals, care homes, and GP appointments was difficult, making it hard for her to support her child and understand important medical information.

Despite these challenges, Santokh showed great determination. She joined the ESOL course to improve her English and gain confidence. She wanted to better communicate with medical professionals, care workers, and others involved in her child’s care. Her goal was to make everyday life easier and reduce stress in important situations.

Santokh has achieved 100% attendance and always engages in class activities. She is excited to use new phrases in real-life situations and shares her experiences with joy. Her positive attitude and enthusiasm are an inspiration to her classmates.

Brunilda Zeneli

Brunilda has been living in the UK for seven years. Before starting her course, she began volunteering at an Early Years setting which she found challenging as she had no experience. However, Brunilda now feels much more confident and professional in her role.

The course has helped Brunilda gain the skills and knowledge needed to work well with children, understand their learning and development and make them feel safe and secure. It also taught her how to work effectively as part of a team. Thanks to her hard work, Brunilda has secured a full-time job at an Early Years setting.

Brunilda progressed from Level 1 and as of early February, had 100% attendance. She participates actively in class, contributes to group work and is confident when presenting her research. Her assignments are well researched and show her understanding. Feedback from her manager praised Brunilda’s support for a child with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and her helpfulness to other practitioners.

Vanessa Aparecida Mendes Da Silva

Vanessa decided to restart her learning journey after 20 years away from education, by enrolling at Redbridge Institute in September 2023 by enrolling on an ESOL Entry 3 course. Although she initially felt nervous and overwhelmed, the support from her tutor and learning support assistants helped her gain confidence.

Vanessa has demonstrated remarkable academic achievements, consistently achieving her goals and targets in ESOL. Her determination to overcome language barriers and build confidence is truly inspiring. Vanessa exemplifies outstanding behaviours through her teamwork, communication, collaboration, and consistent attendance. She actively participates in class discussions, always eager to help her peers.

Her long-term goal is to work in childcare, and she pursues personal this by attending employability workshops at Redbridge Institute as well as securing a volunteer position at a local childcare provider, alongside her ESOL course.

Mythily Vinayagalingam

Mythily moved to the UK from Sri Lanka 10 years ago and joined the ESOL Pre-Entry course to improve her speaking confidence. Despite her nerves, it quickly became clear that her previous education in Sri Lanka, had given her a solid foundation. However, her main goal was to overcome her fear of speaking.

At first, Mythily was very quiet in class, hesitant to contribute. Over time, with encouragement and hard work, she began to come out of her shell. She now confidently answers questions, takes part in role plays, and is happy to work collaboratively with others. Mythily often goes out of her way to help classmates, making sure everyone feels supported. During a group project to create a life-sized human body poster, she led the activity, guiding her peers and ensuring teamwork throughout.

Mythily has excellent attendance, punctuality, and always completes her homework. Her confidence has grown immensely, and she’s now progressing well towards her goal of moving up to the next level. Her ultimate ambition is to work in childcare or as a teaching assistant.

Neerja Singh

Neerja moved to the UK from India, where she studied music, and joined the Entry 3 Speaking and Listening course to improve her English and pursue her dream of becoming a teaching assistant.

Neerja has excellent attendance and works hard in every lesson. She not only completes her work on time but also goes above and beyond by doing extra reading and preparing presentations for the whole class. This effort has significantly boosted both her language skills and her confidence.

What makes Neerja truly exceptional is her commitment to volunteering. She contributes her time to the Food Bank, Vision Redbridge Culture team, and Colours of Redbridge. Her enthusiasm for giving back to the community has inspired two classmates to start volunteering as well. Neerja willingly shares her experiences and provides helpful information to others, creating a positive ripple effect in and out of the classroom.

Through her hard work, volunteering, and willingness to support others, Neerja is making impressive progress towards her goals.

Mima Dzhumerkova

Mima, originally from Bulgaria with a BA in Psychology, joined Redbridge Institute to further her education after a long break from formal learning. Her journey began with Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools, where she excelled and was inspired to continue progressing in her studies.

Building on her success, Mima quickly moved onto the Fast Track Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Her tutors have been consistently impressed by her dedication and ability to apply her learning as a volunteer in a primary school.

Mima is now working towards her ultimate goal of becoming a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). She is completing her Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning with 100% attendance along with commitment to online weekend sessions.

A valued classmate, supporting her peers and recently chosen to represent her group in the upcoming Learner Forum.

Aasma Butt

Aasma Butt has been named our Learner of the Month for July. She is currently enrolled in the Entry Level 2 Speaking and Listening course at the Redbridge Institute of Adult Education (RIAE). Throughout her time here, Aasma has exhibited extraordinary growth and development in her personality, confidence, and English language skills. Her goal is to further enhance her abilities at Redbridge Institute to improve her career prospects. Given her strong work ethic and the support she receives, she is well on her way to achieving her ambitions.

Sadia Shahid

Sadia Shahid is currently a student at Redbridge Institute, where she is pursuing the AAT Level 3 course. In her lessons, she has demonstrated remarkable resilience, refusing to give up when faced with challenges and instead persevering until she completes her tasks. Her dedication and hard work have paid off, as she has secured a job following a period of volunteering. Sadia’s commitment to her studies and her determination to overcome obstacles have been key factors in her success.

Pauline Sophy

Pauline Sophy is presently enrolled in the ‘Award in Education’ Training course at Redbridge Institute. She is a highly motivated learner who consistently puts in the effort to achieve her objectives. This dedication has recently paid off, as she has secured a position at Colours of Redbridge, where she will be working as a Community Producer. Her hard work and commitment to her studies have undoubtedly contributed to this new and exciting career opportunity.

Geanina Taskiran

Geanina is enrolled in the Teaching Assistant Level 1 course after successfully completing the Preparing to Work with Children Entry 2 and Entry 3 courses.
Geanina is a dedicated learner, maintaining 100% attendance throughout her studies. Her commitment to her education is unwavering, but what truly sets her apart is her willingness to help her classmates.
In every class activity, Geanina focuses not only on her own learning but also actively seeks opportunities to assist her peers. Whether it’s explaining tricky concepts, offering digital skills support, or simply being a supportive presence, Geanina ensures that everyone in the class feels supported and ready to succeed.
Having been in the UK for just 2 years, English is not Geanina’s native language, yet she eagerly works to improve her skills in working with children. She is awaiting confirmation on a volunteering position at a nearby school, which will support her progression to Teaching Assistant Level 2 in the near future.

Tamanna Midul

Tamanna is an outstanding student in her ESOL Entry 2 class, with perfect attendance, punctuality, and high-standard homework. She collaborates well with classmates, confidently asks questions, and is eager to learn. As an active member of the Learner Forum, she represents her peers and shares outcomes, showing her dedication to both personal and group progress. Actively seeking employment, Tamanna has gained confidence from the class, aiding her in job interviews. She is planning to continue improving her English skills next year.

Maria Shwetha

Maria Shwetha joined our Employability workshops and Essential Digital Skills courses to improve her job prospects. She enjoyed learning with us and valued the support from her tutors and classmates. Her efforts paid off, as she has now secured two job offers in the Health & Social Care sector, which she is excited to pursue.

Kalwinder (Kindi) Kaur

Kindi began her journey with Redbridge Institute by attending the Manage Your Money workshop, which was a real eye-opener. She gained confidence, learned valuable skills, and became more mindful of her spending. The course inspired her to apply for volunteer work with Citizens Advice and changed her approach to managing money. Kindi hopes to pass on the lessons she’s learned to her children, embracing her late father’s wisdom: “Every penny gained is every pound saved.”

Kim Greenway

Kim joined one of our Multiply courses to improve her maths skills. She then enrolled in a Functional Skills Maths L1 course, which she really enjoyed. Although she initially found returning to learning and being in a new environment daunting, her classmates and tutor were very supportive. Kim gained confidence in maths and recalled much of what she had learned in school. She now plans to further her studies to obtain a better qualification and secure a job.

Gurpreet Kaur

Gurpreet is enrolled on the Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner Level 2 and an English and Digital Skills course as well as attending her placement twice a week and working part-time. During any available free time, she can be found working at a computer station in Redbridge Institute. Despite all this Gurpreet has achieved a perfect attendance record.

Gurpreet actively participates in class discussions, engages with her peers, and demonstrates strong teamwork skills. Despite initially appearing somewhat reserved, Gurpreet has noticeably grown in confidence throughout the course, particularly evident in her confident delivery during presentations. Her assignments reflect thorough research and a good understanding of the subject.

Gurpreet is determined and dedicated in her work. She is a natural in her work placement and has become a lot more confident. Her plans are to progress into Level 3 to give her a greater chance of being offered work as an Early Years Practitioner.

Asma Zaman

Asma Zaman is a learner who is balancing multiple roles in life. Despite juggling part-time work and caring for her young family, Asma remains committed to her educational journey. Currently enrolled in Maths, English, Business Skills, and Digital courses at Entry 3 level, she exemplifies determination and positivity in her approach to learning.

Asma’s perseverance is apparent in the classroom. She consistently attends classes punctually, demonstrating her eagerness to learn and improve her skills. She has a very positive attitude towards learning and her dedication not only sets her apart but also inspires her classmates and teachers.

Saima Bahkt

Saima successfully completed the Preparing to Work with Children E3 course in December 2023. When she first began the course, she was a reserved learner who lacked confidence, especially since it was her first experience studying in the UK. However, over time, she has shown significant growth in confidence. She now actively participates in class discussions, sharing her ideas and opinions, and readily assists her classmates.

Saima’s confidence increased outside the classroom as well. She has secured a position in an after-school program, something she would have found daunting  before her time at Redbridge Institute.

Saima is enthusiastic about expanding her knowledge and expertise in working with children. Currently, she is enrolled in Childcare Level 1 and is actively seeking a voluntary placement in an early years setting to further enhance her skills. Her dedication, motivation, and eagerness to learn are remarkable and are reflected in her perfect attendance and punctuality.

Despite facing language barriers as English is not her first language, Saima is determined to improve her language skills and will be joining an ESOL course in the future. She currently has a placement at a nursery and her goal is to advance to higher-level Childcare courses.

Diana Colodii

Originally from Ukraine, Diana has brought her positive spirit to our community here at Redbridge Institute. Balancing the responsibilities of being a kitchen assistant and caring for her child, Diana’s dedication and warmth shine through in everything she does.

In the classroom, Diana stands out as one of our most engaged and supportive students. Always full of news, she actively participates by asking questions and extending a helping hand to fellow learners. Her inclusive nature is evident as she gladly engages with all her fellow learners, showing genuine interest in their lives.

Recently, she played a pivotal role in organizing our festive Christmas party, showcasing her talents by baking a delicious cake adorned with the course code.

Despite facing challenges, Diana is also a devoted caregiver to her sick mum. Juggling numerous appointments and visits, she continues to pursue her goal of improving her English, driven by a desire to enhance her job prospects. Her determination and positive spirit make her a true inspiration to her classmates.

Khushboo Jain

Khushboo started her learning journey at Redbridge Institute in September 2023, driven by a desire to re-enter the Finance sector. As a dedicated learner, she has maintained a flawless attendance record and achieved an impressive 97% in her exams. Khushboo’s commitment to mastering the course content is evident in her classroom behaviour.

Despite the demands of raising young children, Khushboo is committed to her studies and proves to be a supportive colleague, always ready to assist others. Her ability to balance family responsibilities and her demanding coursework is a commendable example for her peers.

Initially uncertain about returning to her finance career due to a prolonged absence caused by her husband’s international work assignments, Khushboo overcame her reservations. She is now taking proactive steps to establish a career in the UK, where her family has settled. Khushboo’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and a successful navigation of the challenges associated with restarting her professional path.

Eric Edward Pyne-Bailey

Eric’s career spanning 37 years in electrical and motor-vehicle engineering took an unexpected turn due to a workplace accident in April 2021. Forced to change his line of work, Eric seized this moment as an opportunity to resume his educational journey, despite having left school early to support his family.

Enrolling in classes at the Redbridge Institute marked a significant step for Eric, who lacked formal qualifications. His learning journey is characterized by an exceptional work ethic and a determination to enhance his skills. Eric’s commitment to his coursework is evident through his consistent and timely submission of homework, earning him an impressive 100% in Mathswatch assignments.

Active participation in class discussions and activities is a hallmark of Eric’s learning approach. His friendly and cooperative personality shines through as he goes out of his way to assist and support fellow students. Eric’s aspiration for the future is clear—he aims to improve his skills and attain qualifications in Functional Skills Maths. Beyond that, he envisions a path in education, either as a teacher or supervisor, or even pursuing a university degree in business studies and management.

What stands out in Eric’s story is his resilience and dedication. Despite the challenges presented by a significant career shift, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of education and personal growth. In the spring of 2022, Mariana made a significant move from Ukraine to the UK, setting her sights on building a future that included employment in an office setting. Her pursuit of this goal led her to enrol in an ESOL course at Redbridge Institute, where her journey towards linguistic and professional growth began.

Since September 2022, Mariana has exhibited exceptional behaviour, punctuality, attendance, and an unwaveringly positive attitude towards her studies. Her enthusiasm for learning is palpable, as she consistently displays curiosity and poses insightful questions, demonstrating her commitment to acquiring knowledge.

Mariana’s dedication extends beyond the classroom. She consistently goes the extra mile by meticulously completing both classwork and homework to a remarkably high standard. Her thirst for knowledge is further evident in her dedication to extra study and listening activities, ensuring that she maximizes her learning potential.

Natalia Mamchur

Natalia and her husband Mykola arrived in the UK from Ukraine in 2022. Their journey at Redbridge Institute began through an “English for Everyday” course and afterwards enrolled on an adult skills class.

Natalia’s commitment to her education is truly exemplary. She boasts a remarkable record of 100% punctuality and attendance, showcasing her dedication to learning. In every lesson, she exhibits a positive and diligent attitude, setting an inspiring example for her fellow learners.

What sets Natalia apart is her unwavering support for her husband Mykola within the class. Her encouragement not only contributes to his progress but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among their peers. Natalia’s friendly disposition has facilitated the formation of strong relationships with other students, creating a supportive learning environment.

Natalia’s journey at Redbridge Institute has empowered her to become more independent. Her meticulously organised folder is a testament to her commitment to revising and mastering the course material. Additionally, she takes a proactive approach to her learning journey by preparing questions in advance when seeking clarification from her tutor, instead of relying solely on online translation tools.

Natalia’s progress is even more astonishing when considering her initial arrival in the UK with no English language proficiency and likely facing challenging circumstances. Her determination and newfound confidence are evident in her rapid development. Natalia’s aspirations extend beyond her current level, as she is eager to advance through the course levels. Furthermore, her background as a speech therapist in Ukraine fuels her desire to continue her professional work in the UK.

Bibi Pamphile

Bibi began her learning journey with Redbridge Institute in September 2022, following her enrolment on our Teaching Assistants (Level 1) course.

Following completion of Level 1, Bibi immediately enrolled for the Level 2 course, which she has now also successfully completed.

Commenting on the demands she has experienced as an adult learner, Bibi said: “There have been times when I have found studying quite challenging; not only because I have to juggle learning with being a full-time housewife and mother of four children, but I also have some ongoing health issues.

“This led to me falling behind with my assessments during Level 2, and I became worried that I would not be able to complete the course. At one point, I nearly left.

“Thankfully, I confided in my tutor and a learning support assistant, and they encouraged me to continue and supported me to get back on track.”

The support she received combined with her determination to become a primary school teaching assistant, was enough for Bibi to reconsider and she soon caught up.

Bibi has now completed her Level 2 course and will continue towards her goal by studying for Level 3 in September this year (2023).

When asked what difference studying has made to her life, Bibi said: “I feel such a huge sense of achievement from learning and from knowing that I am improving myself through my studies.

“I am confident that I will achieve my goal – I have really enjoyed the time I have spent on placement in schools, and I know that becoming a teaching assistant will be a rewarding career.”

Bibi has now enrolled onto the Level 3 course and is hoping to get a job in a school soon. She is an inspiration to all learners who might be struggling with completing their course and a great example of what a big difference asking for support can make.

Pradeep Suthakar

Newbury Park resident Pradeep, who is currently studying for a Level 2 qualification in Maths, enrolled at Redbridge Institute in 2022, following the death of her father the previous year, which brought her own future into sharp focus.

Pradeep explained: “I felt lost when my dad died – I just didn’t know what to do but I eventually came to realise that if I wanted to widen my employment prospects, I would need more qualifications.”

“I really regret not returning to education years ago. I love the energy at Redbridge Institute and wish I had enrolled years ago. Particularly as, prior to moving to Newbury Park, I had lived in Gants Hill, opposite the road that Redbridge Institute is on.”

Helen Tkachenko - ESOL

Helen Tkachenko and her family came from Ukraine as refugees to stay with a family in Redbridge.

She explained: “The war happened so suddenly and I lost my home, my work and my friends. Coming to the UK was very hard, I had to start my life again from zero. I wanted to apply for a job but my English was very basic.”

Helen managed to get her daughters into a local school, but she became depressed and needed to feel more confident.

“I needed to find a place to improve my English. Redbridge Institute was really helpful and, on the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course, I found a lot of friends and my tutor Sladjana created a positive atmosphere which helped us all to feel happier.”

Through Redbridge Council, Helen started volunteering with the Lifeline Project, helping other Ukrainian refugees. She said the supportive team at Redbridge Institute helped to organise additional English language in Redbridge Library courses for the growing Ukrainian community.

“The English courses are such a blessing for the Ukrainian community,” she explained. “Many of them have very basic English and they need to improve their skills to find work. Redbridge Institute gave this opportunity for them.”

Helen’s ESOL course helped her to become much more fluent in English and she has now secured employment supporting Ukrainian families.

“I’ve also found a nice house for my family. Now, I feel like part of the community,” Helen said.

Rumeen Zaman – Early Years Level 2 and Level 3

Rumeen grew up in London and left her A Level studies to start work. After marrying young, she moved to Bangladesh, where she had her two children and worked in a school.

When she returned to the UK in 2015, she settled in the Redbridge area to be close to her mother.

“I come from an academic family,” she explained. “I felt inadequate compared with them. Once I had got my children settled in school, I wanted to do something for myself and to enhance my knowledge. I wanted to be successful and to be a role model for my children.”

She came for an interview at Redbridge Institute where she initially enrolled on a Level 2 Early Years Childcare course as well as taking the opportunity to gain her GCSE Maths to be able to work in a school environment.

She achieved a Distinction and progressed to Level 3, being awarded another Distinction. “Redbridge Institute really helped me, I had great support and that was really important on my journey,” Rumeen explained.

Her Level 3 tutor Asma was very encouraging, giving those who were interested in further study the belief that they could apply to university. She even arranged for a university tutor to visit them at Redbridge Institute.

Rumeen went on to Kingston University, graduating three years later with a First-class BA (Hons) degree in Education and Leadership in Practice.

“It took perseverance and resilience, but at times I felt a force was pushing me forward to attain something,” she said.

“It was really difficult. In my second year my son started university at Westminster. My daughter was doing her A levels. It was a campus with three students in our house and books everywhere.”

Rumeen’s daughter is now at university too, and Rumeen firmly believes in the power of education to grow confidence and self-esteem.

“I took myself on my learning journey, I wanted to make a challenge for myself, and no-one can take it away from me. My family are so pleased and proud.”

Setu Hasan

Setu Hassan has three children, the youngest just two-years-old, so finding the opportunity to study has been difficult.

“Redbridge Institute has helped me to realise my dream,” she said. “I always had the hunger to study. I really want to do something good with my life, to get a good job.”

She attends afternoon classes, when her daughter is at play group. She has taken maths and computer courses as well as improving her English by attending the ESOL course.

“I’m really learning a lot. When I came to this country, I wasn’t able to speak English very well, now I can speak without fear. Redbridge Institute has given me back my hopes,” Setu said.

“My dream is to go to university and this is my first step,” she explains, “I would like to become a teacher.”

Meesha worked for Sainsbury’s as a trainer for 10 years before being made redundant.  She then went on to work at a school doing admin work, again being made redundant, this then resulted in her being unemployed for 18 months.  During this time Meesha attended various Family learning courses with her child and it was at one of the library sessions that she saw a flyer advertising courses at Redbridge Institute…
