Redbridge Learners Bring Maths to Life for National Numeracy Day

To celebrate National Numeracy Day, learners from different maths classes at Redbridge Institute took part in activities that showed how maths is part of everyday life.

Level 1 Maths (ZS2310) – BMI Challenge

Our Level 1 learners explored how numeracy links to health by taking part in the Know Your Numbers – BMI Challenge. Using calculators and a simple formula, they measured and calculated their Body Mass Index (BMI), then discussed ways to stay healthy through everyday habits like walking, eating well, and managing stress. The session built their confidence in using formulas and interpreting results in a real-world context.

Entry 3 Maths – Supermarket Budgeting

Entry 3 learners took their maths learning into the community with a visit to Tesco Express. They created shopping lists, compared prices, and calculated savings based on real promotions. Some used self-checkouts and digital Clubcards, gaining valuable digital and budgeting skills. Back at the Institute, they reviewed their spending, estimated costs, and discussed money management.

These activities showed that maths isn’t just a subject—it’s a life skill that supports confident, everyday decisions.
